The Ways of the Cable

Super beautiful and deceptively simple, the cable adds texture, variety and style to any knitted piece. Learn the concepts behind the twist, how to cable with and without a cable needle, and if there is time, how the basics can be combined to make more complex textures.

This two hour class is $25 and a great way to ignore the fact we are headed into a grand total of 30cm of snow by the end of the weekend! Tea, coffee and everything you need to practice in the store will be provided. Check our classes page for more info!

You may be wondering what we’ve been up to down at the little yarn store in St. Henri.

Well, after we cleaned up the debris and empty bottles from the Valentine’s Day Massacre,  we set about making a few orders.  Not much new yarn . . . yet . . . but we did get a huge box of needles and other tools in. 

VERY exciting!!! 

Besides the fact that we just love getting stuff, we FINALLY found a source for the Inox Express needles–kinda like Addis (which are coming soon) with a sharper tip, different cable and smaller price tag.  So, nickle-plate lovers, come on down!

We also got these groovy, lickable things in from Susan Bates . . . among which is a fantastic giant tassel-making tool.  A fantastic giant tassle tool with the oddest packaging ever.  Here’s the back of the package:

Okay, so most of it is just ideas for things to do with tassels. But just in case you were jonesing for a little narrative along with your tassel-making, there is a story on the back to entice you:

Hey all! We are introducing a new workshop this spring, that will bring the personalized gifted toy to a whole new level.

Toy Finishing With Jennie

This class focuses mainly on how to embellish and personalize your knitted toy - from skin tone selection to eye types and styles, hair variety, and the different ways to apply facial features. The student will learn how to make their toy safe for all ages, while ensuring the finished product does not look generic.

The class will also focus on clothing design, design construction from sketches, and how to incorporate ethnic dress elements.

When you register, you will receive an easy to knit, straightforward basic doll body pattern (see above picture) with appropriate yarn in a range of skin tones. You will be expected to come to the first class with a finished doll (your canvas, so to speak).

There is a two week gap in between the two classes to ensure enough time for you to finish the basic face and hair portion of your toy. Because the doll will be personalized to your liking, dress yarn, hair yarn and other embellishments are not included. Though if you are buying your supplies at Ariadne, you will receive a class discount on your items. You are also free to bring in any items (yarn, roving, eyes, floss etc) you have about at home to embellish your knitted toy. No Problem.
